Are you the guy that hooks the sail on at the very top?

I like the cut of your jib.

Well that's pretty damn excellent. What boat are you on in the first picture? It looks like a ton of fun.

There's not enough NOPES for this.

It's an old Hunter 40, pretty nice boat, had to get rid of a cracked swedge fitting at the top of the backstay and put on a Sta-Lok.

Nope, there's ropes for that, I fix and replace rigging.

I've never been scared of heights, working up masts is really not all that bad.

What are you doing up there? Replacing Sails?

I'd love to have a Hunter 40. The older ones (late 80s) are getting pretty cheap. Have you seen the new ones? They're incredible! If I lived near better water I think I'd be working on a boat this summer instead of a race car. Instead I'm just gonna mooch time on the water from my friend who has a J24. Beggars can't be choosers, right? =P

The newer Hunters seem 'cheap' in comparison. I'm not sure I would buy any of the mass produced boats these days, just too much plastic and flashy stuff.
J/24's are a lot of fun, I race a J/22 quite a bit. And for me racecars are the hobby, sailing is the sport. And I've been working on them through college because I have some decent connections and know what I'm doing, which definitely beats waiting tables.

We were replacing one of the wire terminal fittings for the backstay that had cracked. Had to go up to unhook it from the top, let it down to my coworker who sawed it off, fitted a new fitting and then pull it back up and rehook it.

You mean hanging at a yacht club working on boats is better than waiting tables? No kidding!
My club (well, former club technically) races J/22s - that's the boat I learned how to sail on (that and the Flying Scot lol). They're a ton of fun but I never got into racing really. For me BMW club racing is the sport and sailing is the hobby. When I'm on a boat I like to cruise, have some rum and enjoy BS'ing with my friends. Going "fast" in a 22 is fun but it's not loud enough =P

Cool! Sailing is my favorite thing to do in the whole world. I love it more than driving. I only get out s couple times a year now, but when I do it's racing a J/92. I hope to be able to get a Laser or Vanguard 15 at some point in the future, if I ever have money left over from car projects.

J/92's are fun boats, I raced on one for a little while, as well as it's little brother the J/90(the fastest I've ever been on a keelboat). My mom races J/22's and I have a Laser that I race as well as my parents having a V15 that they race. I've grown up with it and it's definitely more of a sport(and now a job) than a recreational activity for me but I love it.

Jib are the front triangular sails. Countries used to have different jib sails on their ships, and one could usually identify an unknown ship from the cut of their jib sail, so saying you like the cut of another ship's jib was to mean you thought the ship was an ally or friendly. It's known as a colloquialism to say that you like someone's appearance or demeanor, and also a terrible nautical pun.

I have a longstanding irrational prejudice against boating as one of the snobbiest activities in existence.
Then my parents bought a second house on the water, and two boats.

It depends who you are dealing with. There's plenty of snobs in just about every activity.

Sure, but it's more like the general idea of it. For example, when I hear the following activities, my first thought is:
Ultimate frisbee - hippies
Beer league kickball - nostalgic 30-something office workers
Hunting - rednecks
Autocross - car nerds
Small time local metal shows - metalheads
Boating - snobby rich people
It's all my mom's fault really, because even though I grew up in a pretty well-off family, my mom has a strong anti-elitist streak and always tried to instill that in me as well. Like, we were the rich people who didn't belong to a country club because country clubs are for snobby rich people, even though we probably had more money than plenty of people who did belong to country clubs.
I've had to recalibrate my feelings towards certain snobby activities since I now live in Wisconsin and I grew up in DC. Because in DC if you had a boat and played golf, basically you're a motherfucker who thinks they're better than other people. But here in Wisconsin, all kinds of regular middle class type people play golf and have boats.
